Cork Airport cuts bag-drop queues with Airware’s mobile-first technology

At Cork Airport, like so many other terminals, reducing queues and enhancing the passenger experience are always at the top of the agenda.

"We could set our clock by when we had queues," says Darran Dineen, General Manager of Operations, Facility Safety and IT at Cork Airport. "Big queues at check-in, and they drastically improved almost overnight when Airware went in."

Before adopting Airware’s bag tag and drop appliances, Cork Airport had limited self-service options for many of its customers.  This has been reversed dramatically, with 80-90 per cent of Cork Airport’s customers now able to check their own bags using Airware’s self-service solution, according to Dineen.

Airware meets passengers where they already are, on their phones. By enabling travellers to check in, weigh, tag and drop their own luggage via their mobile phones, the solution reduces the entire bag-drop process to under three minutes. Rather than waiting in line, passengers can easily access one of the Airware self-service appliances, ensuring a quick and efficient departure on their day of travel.

Cork Airport was one of the earliest adopters of Airware self-service technology, with uptake particularly strong among Ryanair's customers, who implemented the innovative technology back in 2023. Following this success, the solution was then adopted by Aer Lingus in 2025. With the airports’ two major carriers on board, self-service bag tag and drop in Cork Airport has become the norm, rather than the exception.

" You could talk about various different features, but the prime objective is to increase passenger throughput, enhance the passenger experience, and do practical things like remove queues. Which we seem to have achieved."

Dineen highlights the ease of the installation and the straightforward maintenance, speaking on how quickly passengers took to the new appliances, with very few needing guidance or assistance. "Customers seem to find it quite intuitive to use," he says, highlighting the minimal friction in the adoption process.

Cork Airport continues to demonstrate its position as a pioneer in aviation technology, and its adoption of the Airware solution is a testament to that forward-thinking approach. This partnership reflects a shared commitment to innovation and operational excellence, and it is only the beginning. Together, we look forward to building on this partnership and to helping shape what’s next for Cork Airport and the passengers it serves.

For Cork Airport, the measure of success is simple: fewer queues, smoother journeys, and a product that just works. Airware is delivering all three.
